The village of Relleu
RELLEU is a typical Spanish pueblo nestled in the hills of the Sierra l’ Aguilar.
Here you can stay in the peace of the countryside of Spain and yet close enough to the liveliness and all the facilities you need on the Costa Blanca.
It is ‘ as the crow flies ‘ 7 km from the beaches of Villajoyosa and on about a 400 m altitude.
The village has approx 1.200 inhabitants, (see source) of which approx 50% expats and who are well integrated by the Spaniards.
The Spanish residents are proud of their village and appreciate it when they see you make a tour around the village to discover the looks and history of ‘their village’…
Relleu gives many homes magnificent views of valleys and mountains. Sometimes there is even some sea view.
A good landmark is the mountain ” Puig Campana ” which has an unnatural looking square hole in its top which is characteristic for the area… The village offers a peaceful environment where you pick up the Mediterranean sunshine and fresh mountain air.
In the summer it is less hot than on the coast, (less humid). Surrounded by almond orchards and olive groves, the village is steeped in history, originally formed around an ancient Moorish castle. Less than 40 km from Alicante airport, 25 minutes from the beaches of the Costa Blanca ( Benidorm and Villajoyosa ) and 20 minutes from the nearest major shopping mall Finestrat where you will find all sorts of shops.
The village itself has all the necessary amenities: supermarkets, restaurants, bars, banks, butcher, bakery, pharmacy, health-clinic and the weekly market Relleu . In the village live about 1.400 people of which approximately half are mostly foreigners who permanently reside here.
Relleu is well known for its fiestas and famous olive oil ‘ Señorios de Relleu ‘ and its hanging bridge ´Pasarela de Relleu´ and is a perfect starting point for hikers and cyclists. The sunsets are often spectacular without exception.

A nice asset for those who live with this view because they have a ‘lake view’.
Above it, the lowest viewing point can be seen in the distance towards the sea and some sea can be seen if the air is not too humid.

A few km’s from the village of Relleu this is a no longer in use reservoir ‘ Pantano Amadorio ‘.
It dates from 1870 and has exceptionally (eg after a so called ‘gota fria’ = first cold rain of the year ) standing water in it.

The ‘Pantano Amadorio’ as it most is… dry. This was in July 2014. Note the dam on the right. Behind it you can climb down, (use ropes!).
Caminito del Reylleu
New in January 2020 In a unique natural enclave next to a 17th century architectural work, and hanging on the rocky strait of the reservoir, in Relleu, runs now a new hanging walkway! A 200-meter walkway over the strait with several wooden viewpoints, some of them with a glass floor. A place with an incredible landscape richness that you cannot miss.
It reminds me of the famous ´Caminito del Rey´ in Granada, now Relleu has its ´Caminito del Reylleu´ 😉
